A list of authors who feature black and brown characters in the fantasy and paranormal romance genres.

After all the searching I've done, I have come to find that there are some authors out there churning out black and brown fantasy romance novels without fail! So here's a quick list of some go-to authors you can search for in your time of need. Each of the authors below has more than three books featuring black and brown characters in the fantasy and/or paranormal romance genre.

Don't freak out if you don't see your favorites! This is just the beginning - I'll be sure to get them in next time!

Disclaimer: I have not read all of the works mentioned in this list. Please do your own research and check the content warnings before picking up a title to make sure it is right for you.

Whitney Hill

Whitney Hill, author of the Shadows of Otherside fantasy series, currently has a collection of seven published works that span two different fantasy series.

Each novel features a black female lead in an urban fantasy world where vampires, fae, elves, and the like, struggle for power in Otherside. A community for supernaturals embedded in real world North Carolina. Ebon Rebellion (displayed to the left) is the third installment in the Shadows of Otherside series.

Angela J. Ford

Ford has penned over twenty unique works in the genre of fantasy romance. Not every story features a black or brown heroine, but a lot of her works do and she presents a consistent delivery of magic, intrigue, and passion.

The majority of her works can be read in stand alone, but fit into an overarching series theme.

The Stolen Brides of The Fae series boasts a total of eight books featuring a different fae feature romance. Stolen Ice Bride is the only one to feature a black woman, but Ford also has five other series of a similar flavor. Two of which have black love interests (Tower Knights and Enchanted Wood).

L. Penelope

Penelope is an award winning author in the fantasy and paranormal romance genre. She has over 30 distinct works, including short stories and novellas.

Two of Penelope's series, The Earthsinger Chronicles and The Bliss Wars, feature black and brown characters at the forefront. In total these series currently run across five books, with more to come.

Penelope's latest work titled Savage City features a black heroine stuck in a case of mistaken identity. It is the first installment to the Bliss Wars series.

Jessica Cage

Cage has quite a few novels featuring POC leads, but the Djinn Rebellion series is too good not to mention her on this list.

A collection of six works (as of the time I am writing this), the Djinn Rebellion chronicles the storylines of six different black men and women in interconnected plot lines as they engage in magical and mystical showdowns for love, life, and power.

If that doesn't entice you to pick this one up, just go look at the other cover art. Not only are some of them absolutely swoon worthy *cough* *cough* Djinn, but they are also just super cool!
